Egg Tray Making Machine for Brazil and Argentina: 60Hz Power, Drying and Payback

If you are buying an egg tray machine for Brazil, Argentina, Peru or Colombia, three things decide whether the project works: the grid you are connecting to, the way you dry the wet tray, and how much waste paper you can actually buy each month. Everything else — mold count, colour of the frame, brand of the PLC — is downstream of those three. Here is how we size a line for South American egg packing plants, based on machines we have shipped and commissioned since 2003.

1. The 50/60 Hz question that changes your quotation

South America is split down the middle on frequency, and it is not a detail you can fix on site:

  • 60 Hz: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador — commonly 220/380/440 V
  • 50 Hz: Argentina, Chile, Bolivia — commonly 380 V

A 60 Hz motor running on 50 Hz loses roughly 17% of its speed, and the reverse overspeeds it. On an egg tray line that shows up as a forming cycle that no longer matches the mold, wet trays sticking to the mold face, and a vacuum pump running outside its curve. So the frequency is fixed at order stage: motor windings, PLC programme timing, heater elements and VFD parameters are all set for the destination grid. Tell your supplier the country and the plant voltage before the proforma invoice, not after the container arrives in Santos.

2. Output is a formula, not a brochure claim

Output (pcs/h) = cavities * 3600 ÷ cycle time in seconds.

A 4-cavity reciprocating machine at a 60-second cycle gives 240 pcs/h — around 1,900 trays in an eight-hour shift once you allow for pulp changeover and mold cleaning. A 32-cavity rotary unit at a 30-second cycle gives 3,840 pcs/h. Ask for the guaranteed figure at 1.2% pulp consistency measured over a four-hour run, and ask whether rejects are counted in or out.

The full range is on our paper egg tray making machine page; the PLC rotary units that most Brazilian and Peruvian packing plants choose sit in the 2,500–3,000 pcs/h band.

3. Drying: where coastal humidity and gas prices decide your margin

A tray leaves the mold at 70–75 g with about 55% moisture. Dry it to 10% or it collapses in the stack. Three options, and the right one depends on your site, not on our catalogue:

  • Sun drying — fine inland in Argentina and Bolivia, 24–48 hours, 3–5% breakage. On the Peruvian coast (Lima, Chincha, Trujillo) humidity stays high through the year and sun drying becomes a bottleneck in exactly the months your orders peak.
  • Drying room with hot air — 4–6 hours, moderate fuel cost, a sensible compromise at 1,000–2,000 pcs/h.
  • Tunnel or multi-layer dryer with boiler — 2–3 hours, breakage typically under 1%, and the only way a 3,000+ pcs/h line keeps its promise through a Brazilian summer.

Then check what fuel you can actually buy: diesel, LPG, natural gas or biomass. Industrial electricity tariffs in Brazil and Argentina differ enough between states and provinces that the same dryer can be cheap in one plant and painful in another — run the per-1,000-tray energy cost before you choose the heat source.

4. Waste paper is a supply chain, not an assumption

At 1–1.5% pulp consistency a 6,000 pcs/h line consumes roughly 450 kg of waste paper and 1.35 tonnes of water per hour. Two consequences for South American buyers:

  • OCC (old corrugated cartons) forms faster and gives a stiffer tray than mixed office paper. If your local supply is mostly printed newsprint, expect longer pulping time and a softer tray — send us 20 kg of your actual paper and we will run a forming trial before the mold is cut.
  • Return-water recycling should recover around 80%. Where water is metered or effluent is charged, budget a settling tank and a clean return line from day one.

5. Egg tray or egg carton? What South American buyers actually order

We build egg tray machinery only — 30-egg trays (6*5), 10-egg and 12-egg cartons, 4-egg and half-dozen packs, duck and goose trays, day-old chick transport trays, and the flanged or extra-depth trays used where trays are stacked ten high in a warehouse. What changes by market is the mix:

  • Wholesale and farm-gate → 30-egg trays, 70–75 g per piece, stacked 10–15 high; strength matters more than finish.
  • Supermarket channel → 12-egg and 10-egg cartons with hinge and locking tabs; closing accuracy is the quality signal buyers check by hand.
  • Hatcheries → day-old chick trays with ventilation holes; the hole pattern is the part that is hardest to get right, and the part most often copied badly.

Paper trays are also replacing EPS foam on the shelf in several South American retail chains, which is usually the moment a packing plant starts looking at its first pulp molding line.

6. Shipping, wiring and commissioning

From Qingdao or Shanghai to Santos and Buenos Aires runs 35–45 days; to Callao, Guayaquil and San Antonio about 30–40 days. A 48-mold line with a 28–35 m dryer loads into roughly seven 40ft containers and needs 200 kW available at the panel — check your transformer before you sign, because a supply upgrade can cost more than the machine in some regions. Budget for a local electrician to pull cable; budget for our engineer to do the commissioning and train the crew, usually 5–7 days for a semi-automatic line and 20–30 days for a full line with tunnel dryer.

Because spare parts take a month to reach South America by sea, we ship a consumable kit with every machine: spare molds, vacuum pump seals, filter screens and heater elements. That kit is the difference between a two-day stoppage and a two-month one.

7. Five questions to ask before the deposit

  1. What is the guaranteed output at 1.2% consistency over a four-hour run, counting rejects?
  2. Which parts are cast iron, which are aluminium, and what mold life is guaranteed in cycles?
  3. What fuel is available at my site, and what is the dryer consumption per 1,000 trays at that calorific value?
  4. How is the machine configured for my grid — 380 V/50 Hz, 220 V/60 Hz or 440 V/60 Hz — and who supplies the transformer?
  5. What is included in commissioning: engineer's flight, visa, days on site, and operator training in Spanish or Portuguese?

FAQ

Can you supply the machine for 60 Hz operation in Brazil?

Yes — motors, heaters, VFD parameters and the PLC program are set for 60 Hz at the order stage. Specify the plant voltage (220/380/440 V) as well, since regional supply differs inside Brazil.

How many trays per hour does a 4-mold machine really produce?

Around 700–1,000 pcs/h at a 50–60 second cycle with three to four operators. Any claim above 1,200 pcs/h from four cavities means an optimistic cycle time.

Can the same machine make 30-egg trays and 12-egg cartons?

Same frame, different mold. Many plants start with 30-egg trays for wholesale and add a 12-egg carton mold when a supermarket contract appears; the pulping system and dryer stay unchanged.

How long is the warranty and how fast are spare parts?

Two years on the frame and drive, one year on electricals. Consumables ship within 72 hours; by sea to Santos that is roughly five weeks door to door, which is why we recommend the spare kit at first order.

Do you provide Spanish or Portuguese documentation?

Operation and maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams and training material are provided in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Remote video support is available after commissioning.
